PROLOGUE
The Hollywood Sign beckoned her like a magnet—or like a moth to a flame. The sign glowed golden in the magic hour sun—that time of day around sunrise and sunset when the light falls soft and warm and cinematographers love to shoot. Like so many others, Susan Karubian had come here seeking fame and fortune, hoping to make her mark on the world. Oh hell, she had come to be a star like all the others. And she would do it, just not quite in the heady way she'd anticipated.
She had spent hours deciding what to wear. After all, this wasn't exactly in the etiquette books. Probably not the kind of thing you'd find in Ask Amy column. She finally decided on a tasteful dress with high-heeled sandals.
The young woman drove her Passat down Hollywood Boulevard, turning up Franklin, passing the Magic Castle. She turned slowly up Beachwood Canyon, past the low-rent area north of Franklin, up through the towering stone gates with their "Welcome to Beachwood Canyon" signs. Past the movie star homes in the hills—past where she thought she'd be living by now. She drove in circles, past piles of rubble from the earthquake several months ago, figuring that sooner or later she'd hit the right combination of roads and end up where she wanted to be.
The Passat crested the top of the mountain—mountain or hill? What was the difference anyway? A small concrete building with an antenna sat just below the road. No cars. No one around. As quiet as the Sherman Oaks Galleria on a Monday morning. She parked on Mt. Lee Drive.
She rolled up the windows, locked the car, set her purse on the floor by the gas pedal. The note she'd written in a steady hand tucked into her pocket. She hoped someone would find it quickly. Standing beside the car, she realized she'd have to hike down to get to the sign. She had thought it would be at the top of the mountain. She was buggin', as she treaded toward the edge of the road.
The nonstop rain of the last couple weeks had broken. The view from up here was incredible. You could almost see Mexico to the south and the Pacific glittering in the west. The city below, shiny and bright. Pretty and clean from up here. A million doll houses that reminded her of childhood, playing with dolls and making everything come out the way she wanted it to. Little toy cars down below, scooting back and forth. Swarms of ants scurrying this way and that on important business. Oh yeah, everyone here had important business all day and all night. Everyone but her. She gazed down at Los Angeles on the cusp of the millennium. The place to be. Center of the universe. Totally.
She hesitated at the edge of the road, her toe kicking some gravel down the hill. It clattered down, somehow reminding her of the industrial music in the clubs where she liked to hang.
Should she try to talk to him? What would be the point now? She was talked out. And he wouldn't forgive her. Why should he? She had hurt him. No, it was beyond hurt. There was no way to rationalize it.

Paul D. Marks

Broken Windows, the sequel to Paul D. Marks' Shamus Award-winning mystery-thriller White Heat hit the shelves 9/10/18. Publishers Weekly called White Heat a "taut crime yarn" and said of Broken Windows: "Fans of downbeat PI fiction will be satisfied…with Shamus Award winner Marks's solid sequel to… White Heat." Though thrillers and set in the 1990s, both novels deal with issues that are hot and relevant today: racism and immigration, respectively. Marks says "Broken Windows holds up a prism from which we can view the events burning up today's headlines, like the passionate immigration debate, through the lens of the recent past. It all comes down to the saying we know so well, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'." His short stories appear in Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazines, among others, and have won or been nominated for many awards, including the Anthony, Derringer, and Macavity. His story Windward, has been selected for the Best American Mystery Stories of 2018, edited by Louise Penny & Otto Penzler, and won the 2018 Macavity Award for Best Short Story and was also short-listed for a 2018 Shamus Award. Ghosts of Bunker Hill was voted #1 in the 2016 Ellery Queen Readers Poll. He is co-editor of the multi-award nominated anthology Coast to Coast: Private Eyes from Sea to Shining Sea.

"There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too."–New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay
The author of The Wedding Date serves up a novel about what happens when a public proposal doesn't turn into a happy ending, thanks to a woman who knows exactly how to make one on her own…
When someone asks you to spend your life with him, it shouldn't come as a surprise–or happen in front of 45,000 people.
When freelance writer Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her actor boyfriend, his man bun, and his bros, the last thing she expects is a scoreboard proposal. Saying no isn't the hard part–they've only been dating for five months, and he can't even spell her name correctly. The hard part is having to face a stadium full of disappointed fans…
At the game with his sister, Carlos Ibarra comes to Nik's rescue and rushes her away from a camera crew. He's even there for her when the video goes viral and Nik's social media blows up–in a bad way. Nik knows that in the wilds of LA, a handsome doctor like Carlos can't be looking for anything serious, so she embarks on an epic rebound with him, filled with food, fun, and fantastic sex. But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes…

Add to Goodreads badge

Nikole "Nik" Paterson thought she was spending a casual date with her boyfriend, Fisher, and his friends on his birthday. Not a sports enthusiast, Nik wasn't really into the game when all of sudden Fisher tells her to watch something and a proposal shows up on the Jumbotron and Fisher is on bended knee with an engagement ring. To say this was a huge surprise is a major understatement since neither of them had even mentioned being in love with one another. When Nik politely rejects his very-public proposal, Fisher storms off and Nik quickly becomes the object of a viral video and a woman scorned by sports enthusiasts worldwide. Her social media blows up with taunts and threats. Fisher sends her vicious and threatening text messages. The only way Nik was able to safely leave the stadium was to be rescued by Dr. Carlos Ibarra and his sister Angela, who were sitting behind Nik and Fisher and witnessed the entire fiasco. What made everything worse was the fact that Fisher had spelled Nikole's name wrong on the Jumbotron, not that she was interested in marriage with him in the first place. A chance encounter at Dodger Stadium with Dr. Ibarra quickly becomes a flirtation, then a romantic friendship and before you know it, Nik is meeting his best friends and his family. Can she set aside the ingrained doubts of her self-worth from previous harmful relationships and open herself up to Carlos? Is this just a rebound relationship or something more?

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory was another delightfully fun, sexy, smart, and fast-paced read. Once again, Ms. Guillory provides an interracial relationship story without race being the primary focus of the story (Nik is Black and Carlos is Latino). A major portion of this story is obviously the relationship between Nik and Carlos, but there's also the years of self-doubt that Nik is dealing with due to destructive negative feedback from previous relationships. I enjoyed reading about Nik's friends, Constance and Dana and hope that we'll be reading their stories in the future (hint, hint). I also enjoyed revisiting Alexa and Drew from The Wedding Date. Carlos and Drew are good friends and Carlos will be the Best Man at Drew and Alexa's wedding. There's quite a bit going on in this story, but I found one of the most interesting themes to be the female characters dealing with the after-effects of emotionally abusive relationships, especially with regards to Nik and gym owner Natalie (read the book to learn more). Nik and her friends sign up for a self-defense class after the fallout from "the proposal" and it does quite a bit to restore Nik's self-confidence. If you're a romance fan and you've read The Wedding Date then you'll definitely want to grab a copy of The Proposalto read. Seriously, this was a great romance read. I'm lending my copy to my 84-y.o. mother to read. (She wondered why I was laughing and smiling so much while reading this book at her house the other day and after I described the book she said she had to read it. Of course, she has to return it to me after she's finished so I can reread it in the future.) If, for some reason, you haven't read The Wedding Date and you're a romance reader, then run out and grab a copy along with a copy of The Proposal. If you're not a romance reader and are looking for something different to read, then I encourage you to grab copies of The Wedding Date and The Proposal to read as well. You can thank me later. Happy Reading!

Guest Post: Abigail Keam - DEATH BY DRAMA

Hello, my bookish peeps. I've participated in several tours in the past promoting books from the Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series by Abigail Keam. I hope you'll catch up on this series before you read the latest addition, Death by Drama. I'm honored to host a return visit today from this award-winning author and my Appalachian neighbor (she's in Kentucky and I'm in West Virginia). Today Ms. Keam will be sharing with us the origins of this series and what has happened in a few of the first books.

I have always loved reading murder mysteries. When I was decided to pen The Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series, I made several decisions about the tone of the series, which my readers have enjoyed. One was to give my middle-aged female beekeeper sleuth the name of a Biblical king. I also gave her health issues. To add a realistic flavor, I used real locations in the Bluegrass and intertwined history with the storyline. I stirred in quirky friends and feisty honeybees, added a dash of bourbon and a teaspoon of Southern charm, and voila, something unique to read.  I've been very fortunate that many readers have enjoyed this recipe and have stayed with me in the eight years of writing the series. I recently released Death By Drama #11 and am currently working on the twelfth Josiah Reynolds Mystery. It's a joy and privilege to write for mystery readers, and I am so thankful Josiah is welcomed into so many homes.

As with the yellow brick road, it always helps to start at the beginning.

#1. Death By A HoneyBee

READERS' FAVORITE - GOLD MEDAL WINNER
Death By A HoneyBee is an enjoyable read which will capture the interest of most die-hard mystery fans!

Josiah Reynolds, a former art history professor, was once a celebrity with wealth, social position, and a famous husband. Now all of that is gone. The professor finds her circumstances drastically altered. Retired, Josiah is now a full-time beekeeper trying to stay financially afloat by selling honey at the local Farmers Market. She finds her world turned upside down when a man is found dead in her bee yard, only to discover that the victim is her competitor and nemesis. Set in the beautiful horse country of the Bluegrass, Josiah makes the rounds of quirky characters that can only be found in Kentucky. Fighting an unseen enemy in the glamorous world of Thoroughbreds, oak-cured bourbon, and antebellum plantation houses, Josiah struggles to uncover the truth in a city that keeps its secrets well.

#2. Death By Drowning

Readers' Favorite Gold Medal Award Winner 2011 for Best New Mystery Sleuth

In spite of having to recover from serious injuries from her fall down a cliff, Josiah Reynolds is back to sleuthing. This time her friend, Irene Meckler, asks Josiah to investigate the death of her nephew which was ruled accidental. Irene has her doubts. As Josiah fights for her recovery, she fights for the truth regarding a youth and the secret of how he died. In a land where secrets are buried deep in the earth, Josiah searches in a land that doesn't let go of its past easily. The past never dies in Kentucky - the dark and bloody ground.

#3. Death By Bridle

Death by Bridle is as fast-paced and full of personality as we have come to expect from Abigail Keam. A really great read! - Midwest Book Review

Josiah is back on the trail of a murderer. Arthur Aaron Greene III is one of Kentucky's most prominent horse breeders but he is found hanging from the rafters in a horse barn with stones in his pockets and a bucket of water under his feet. The only witness is a nine-year-old boy who can't remember exactly what happened. Relentless in her pursuit of the killer, Josiah stumbles into decades of lies and deception that include her dear friend, Lady Elsmere. Josiah discovers that she must go back to 1962 if she is to find out the truth at all.

#4. Death By Bourbon

Life takes a dramatic turn for Josiah when she witnesses a death at an engagement party for Matt, her best friend. Charming socialite Addison DeWitt falls into a fit after taking a sip of bourbon. That would be upsetting enough, but Josiah is sure it is murder. However, no one will believe her except for Lady Elsmere and Meriah Caldwell, the famous mystery writer. The three of them conspire to bring the murderer to justice. It turns out the suspect is always three steps ahead of them, but Josiah is sure of one thing. There is justice and then there is Kentucky justice.

Guest Post: Holly Quinn - A CRAFTER KNITS A CLUE

Hello, my fellow book lovers. I'm always honored when an author is willing to take time out of their busy schedules and stop by The Book Diva's Reads. Today I'm pleased to announce a visit by Holly Quinn, author of the Handcrafted Mystery Series featuring the debut book A Crafter Knits A Clue. This series combines a cozy mystery with a love of handcrafts. Ms. Quinn will be providing us with a little background into the inspiration for this series. Ladies and Gents, I give you Ms. Holly Quinn.

How I was inspired to write Community Craft, as the local hangout in the new Handcrafted Mystery series.

A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first book in the new Handcrafted Mystery series features Samantha "Sammy" Kane who manages Community Craft, a store on Main Street in a small Wisconsin town after her best friend — the original owner, has an untimely death.

I had been artistically creating and selling painted glasses in a local gift shop for a few years before I began writing this series. I always thought in the back of my mind, someday, I would open a shop where I could rent space to other local artists who would want to sell their handcrafted treasures. This is a photo of the shop below where I continue to sell handmade items and my latest book releases to this day. This photo also was the inspiration for the cover of A Crafter Knits a Clue. Seriously! Check it out! 😊

Anyhow, one Saturday night, a few weeks before Christmas, my husband and I were asked to be "mannequins in the window" for a display contest. The snow was falling, people crowded the streets, and a feeling of jubilation was in the air. The gift store was so packed that night, one could hardly move; it was as if the entire community gathered in one store. I looked at my husband in the window and said, "I have to write about this!" He replied, "Stop talking, we're supposed to be mannequins!" That only made me laugh harder as between the two of us, he behaved as the better stiff model! Of course, I had to wind an intriguing mystery into the mix. And yes, the third book in the Handcrafted series will be based on that moment. A moment in our lives that changed everything…

A funny thing happened after the first manuscript in this series went into production. Someone opened a craft shop in the downtown area where I reside. It's as if the words lifted from the page and became a reality. Imagine that.

Thanks for letting me visit!

For fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, the latest craft frenzy is Holly Quinn's Handcrafted series debut.

Sammy Kane just moved back to her hometown to run a craft store. But when the owner of a nearby yarn shop is murdered, Sammy will needle little help finding the killer.

When a heartbroken Samantha "Sammy" Kane returns to her hometown of Heartsford, WI, for her best friend Kate's funeral, she learns that Kate's much-loved craft store is in danger of perishing with its owner. Confounding all her expectations of the life she would live, Sammy moves back home with her golden retriever and takes over Community Craft. A few doors down Main Street, fellow new arrival Ingrid Wilson has just opened the Yarn Barn, a real "purl" of a shop. But when Sammy strolls over to see if Ingrid could use a little help, she finds Ingrid's dead body—with a green aluminum knitting needle lodged in her throat.

Detective Liam Nash is thrown for a loop as every single citizen of Heartsford seems to have a theory about Ingrid's murder. And nearly everyone in town seems to be a suspect. But the last time Sammy did any sleuthing was as a little moppet. And this is not fun and games. Sammy is eager to help the handsome Liam—who seems to be endlessly inventive in finding reasons to talk with her—and when Liam arrests affable woodworker Miles Danbury, Sammy puts everything on the line to help clear Miles.

As the case comes dangerously close to unraveling, Sammy must stitch the clues together. But the killer has other plans—and if Sammy's not careful, she may wind up in a perilous knot in A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first warm and woolly yarn of Holly Quinn's new Handcrafted mysteries.
